Thousands of Missourians Turn out to be Among the First to Sign Abortion Petition

February 7, 2024

Support among Missourians for the campaign to end the abortion ban continues to grow, seeing 2,000 donors contribute more than $3 million and 5,000 volunteers join the campaign

Missouri – Thousands of Missourians gathered at five events across the state today to kick off the signature gathering effort to put abortion on the ballot and end Missouri’s cruel abortion ban.

The events, held in Columbia, Kansas City, Springfield, St. Joseph, and St. Louis, were organized in response to the outpouring of support the campaign received, marking the first opportunity for Missourians to enshrine the right to reproductive freedom, including abortion, in the Missouri constitution.

“Abortion isn’t always cut and dry. For some people, it is an easy decision. For some people, it is an agonizing decision,” said Reverend Emily Bowen-Marler of Springfield. “But either way, it is their decision to make. It is not mine, it is not yours, and it is certainly not the legislators’ of Missouri.”

“With the ink still drying on the first several thousand petitions, Missourians have eagerly waited for and deserve this opportunity to end the state’s draconian abortion ban.” said Tori Schafer, Missourians for Constitutional Freedom. “As volunteers across the state are getting trained to collect signatures, we urge Missourians to verify their voter registration in advance of signing.”
